Capital Valuation Strengthens Our Team as Marty Mathias Becomes Shareholder

Since CapVal was founded in 1974, we have made it our goal to maintain a team of professionals who have expertise in a variety of cross functional topics. Our founders discovered that different training, education, and experience leads each of us to approach the business valuation process from different perspectives. A business valuation or damages opinion that results in a meaningful, supportable conclusion melds together accounting, finance, law, economics, and general business acumen.
Nearly 50 years of specializing in business valuation and litigation support has us convinced that combining these differing perspectives does result in better value conclusions. We ask different questions and look for different details or nuances within the subject business when we come together as a multi-disciplinary team. As we have said many, many times—there is so much more to business valuation than applying a multiple or rule of thumb.
We are happy to add another terrific skill set in welcoming Marty Mathias as a shareholder in our firm because he brings yet another perspective. Marty has a deep understanding of closely held businesses through his 22 years of experience, including having been a partner in a regional accounting firm. His work has included engaging with business owners in areas of tax, accounting and finance, but also in strategic planning and mergers/acquisitions. Each of these topics are intertwined when we value a company or work with owners to increase the value of their business.
In addition to being a CPA, Marty also has expertise as a forensic accountant and earned the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designation through the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. This involves training to prevent, detect, and investigate potential fraud. CFE’s use a combination of auditing and investigative skills to assist in determining if fraud exists, identifying which documents to preserve, rebuilding financial transactions, and calculating the level of fraud that has occurred.
Marty and his wife, Erin, have a 5-year-old daughter. Marty has been a long-time board member of the Canopy Center, which supports treatment and prevention programs for abused and neglected children. In his free time, Marty enjoys cooking, traveling, reading, and cheering on the Brewers.
